Any castle has legends,
the Fort la Latte does not escape this rule. But this is a legend
this rumour persistent which appears in many accounts of the Average
Age taken again later by a good number of historians: a banneret
of Brittany N of Goyon, companion of Alain Barbe Torte, would have
set up at this place towards 931 a keep out of wooden to supervise
the comings and goings of Norman and to push back them... Let us
leave with the legend the purpose of which is undoubtedly to attest
that the prestigious name of Goyon goes back to immémoriaux
times and approach certainty as for the family of Goyon-Matignon
and with the construction of the castle. The lords de Goyon, lords
of Matignon, built the castle of the Roche-Goyon about the middle
of XIVe century. On a rock peak which advances in the sea the flanked
enclosure of turns raises surrounding a cylindrical keep. The drawbridges
make it possible to cross the two deep cracks which separate it
from the coast. Damaged seriously during the disorders of the League,
the castle is altered and restored between 1690 and 1715 on order
of louis XIV which uses it as coastal defense. It takes the name
of Fort la latte.
