Like the major part of the castles of Corbières, Puilaurens was rebuilt after the multiple punitive forwardings carried out by the knights of north against Cathares. Its geographical situation at the border between the kingdoms of France and Aragon well quickly attracted the interest of monarchy capétienne. Louis IX (death in 1270) and Philippe III the Bold one (death in 1285) are at the origin of the majority of still visible installations.

The castle is open all days :

- April, May, June and September of 10h with 18h
- July and August of 9h with 20h
- October of 10h with 17h
- February, Mars and the first 15 days of November weekends and school holidays of 10h with 17h.

Annual closure of November 16 until at the beginning of February, except for the holidays of Christmas, the Saint Nicolas's Day and other national festivals or demonstrations. Except period, the groups are accomodated all days on reservation with the possibility of arranging the opening hours.
